"The Intolerable Burden" is a film that documents the Carter family of Sunflower County, MS who, in compliance with school policy that supported "freedom of choice," sent thier children to all-white schools prior to full desegregation. The film documents the family's choice and its consequences in rural Mississippi in the late 1960s. Based on the book "Silver Rights," Mae Bertha Carter (the mother) and citizens from their community discuss education in the context of segregation, desecregation and re-segregation. A prominent theme of the movie is the Sunflower County pattern of failing public education for blacks and minorities and the fast track to prison is being replicated throughout the United States.
We will view the movie and discuss it afterwards. Breakfast will be served, please RSVP for headcount
